Asafa Powell and is new world record

In the world championships in Osaka there was talked a lot about the 100m final for men. Who is the fastest. Gay or Powell? Gay has run as fast as 9.84 before the competition. He has also run very impressive in the 200m. Powell was a little bit after with the time 9.90 but he had equalled the world record three times so he was also a big favorite. They had avoid each and never competed in the same race for the whole season. When it all started in the qualifications they was in different heats and it was hard to decide who the winner should be. Powell was very relaxed and almost jogged the last 40m and was on second place. Gay also came on second place in his heat but it was not easy see how much he was actually showing his strength. There was no problem for them to come to the final where they should run against each other for the first time this season.

Powell got a good start and was in the lead the first part of the race but then Gay came and Atkins too. Powell was on third place. 9.96 of Powell and that is not very good for him. Gay's time was 9.85. Powell told later that he had focused a lot on the world record and forgot how to run. He was not relaxed enough and that cost him the gold medal. Of course this was not what he wanted. He wants to beat Gay.

Of course these Athletics stars have to run to make money and Maybe it can be good to run something more even if the world championships was the big goal this year. In Rieti, Italy he proved that he was the best of them all. In the heats he ran on the time 9.74, three seconds better than his old world record. The wind was 1.7 m/s so it was legal. He ran very relaxed and it doesn't looked like it was that fast because he doesn't ran at full power the last meters. This looked very promising to the final. In the final he won easy at the time 9.78. Maybe he could have beaten his new world record if the wind was better. Now it was no wind at all. But with this performance he showed the world that he was the man that should have had the gold medal in Osaka. Even if this was a good run it wasn't a revenge he said afterwards. He wanted to win in Osaka but I think that the world record impress even more. If Gay want to beat the world record it will probably be very hard for him and it is not enough to buy new shoes. We never know when Gay and Powell will meet again but if Gay not is there it's world record warning!
